Honorary Starters

In 2013, for the 30th anniversary of the Mifflinburg 5K race, a new tradition of having a 5K and fun run honorary race starter began. Each year a Miffliburg veteran will be selected to be the honorary starter for the 5K race. Also, each year one young person from the Mifflinburg community will be selected to be the honorary starter for the children's fun run.

2016 5K Honorary Starter James Mitchell

James Mitchell retired after 23 years with the Pennsylvania National Guard. During his time in the service, he was deployed four separate times, to Germany, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Jimmy was born in Lewisburg and currently resides in New Berlin.

2016 Fun Run Honorary Starter Quincy Amabile

Quincy Amabile is the most accomplished runner in Mifflinburg history, qualifying for states in cross country all four years and in the 3200 in track & field as well as being named cross country runner of the year twice. This fall he will be attending Lycoming College to study Special Education.

2015 5K Honorary Starter Marlin “Speedy” Troup

Marlin was born and raised in Union County, in the Mifflinburg area, where he still resides. He is 89 year old and has been happily married for 65 years. Marlin served 13 months and 19 days in the Army's 90th division, based in Germany right in the middle of the action. His service was cut short when he was wounded. Upon his return home, he worked for his Dad, and then spent the majority of his working life as a truck driver. For the last 10 years he has honored his fellow veterans by holding the flag during veteran funeral services.

2015 Fun Run Honorary Starters Garrett Enders and Nick Osman

Garrett and Nick were the 2014 Bassmaster National Chamionships.

2014 5K Honorary Starter Ralph Dreese

Ralph Dreese enlisted in the US Air Force in 1942 and was stationed in Heitel England attached to the 389 Bomb Group. Ralph was a B-24 bomber pilot flying 33 missions, 2 over France and 31 over Germany, with a crew of 10. He and his wife Vivian live in Mifflinburg.

Kylie is the founder of Kelsey's Dream, a foundation dedicated to helping children with cancer.
